    • RE: ant's HP Velotechnik FS26 Scorpion pedelec: First ride report, from opening the box to my first 6 miles.

Great write-up, and I love the photos! I've heard good things about Hostel Shoppe.

How long was your ride, and what was your average speed? Do you know the practical range of your battery?

    • RE: Turning safely, mirrors?

@ant I like the positioning! Are you sure that mounting those on your head tubes won't compromise the structural integrity provided by the head tube gaskets that keep the front end together?

    • RE: Turning safely, mirrors?

@ant I never ride without my Take-a-look mirror on my glasses--it has never let me down for understanding what's on my left.

I have been experimenting with this small Zefal mirror on the right handlebar. It seems like it could work, but (1) I don't remember to look at it, and (2) it is easily bumped out of alignment. Although I haven't actually tried this, on a trike I would be tempted to use Take-a-look mirrors on both arms of my riding glasses.

For a more traditional handlebar mirror, this Hafny mirror has impressed me for being well made and having a high-quality glass lens. The trick would be how to mount it in a way that doesn't make your footprint even wider.

If I'm remembering correctly, 2020's Recumbent Cycle-Con will be in Indianapolis.

    • RE: What do you wear?

I wear breathable cycling clothing, but there are a few things to keep in mind when riding a recumbent:

      1. Baggy shorts are a bad idea, as they will tend to bunch up close to your hips (and admit insects :-O).
      2. You can't use pockets on the back of your jersey or jacket, because your back will be up against the backrest.
      3. Don't put anything in a pocket that doesn't have a zipper! Unsecured items will fall out of your pockets as you ride.

This company makes cycling clothing specifically for recumbent riders: https://www.benditcycling.com/

    • Boston-area trike commuters?

Is anyone commuting by trike in the greater Boston area? Narrow streets without shoulders make this seem like it might be pretty sketchy?

    • Recumbent bikes less stable than DF bikes?

I've been riding a high-rider recumbent for about six months, and have already wiped out twice. This, after wiping out exactly once in 10 years of year-round commuting (including winter commutes) on DF bikes. Are recumbent bikes less stable than DF bikes? Some reasons this might be the case:

      1. Less weight over the front wheel makes the front wheel more likely to lose traction.

      2. Bodyweight planted on seat gives the rider much less ability to control the center of gravity of a recumbent vs. a DF bike, where the rider can easily shift their weight forward, back, and side-to-side.

      Thoughts?
